After 50 Years of Lies and Cover Ups, It’s Time to Investigate Israel’s Dastardly Attack on the USS Liberty

The American Legion has called for a Congressional Inquiry into the attack on the USS Liberty 50 years ago. This excerpt explains why an investigation is needed.

On June 8th 1967 the United States Navy intelligence ship the U.S.S. Liberty was attacked in international waters by aircraft and vessels belonging to Israel. Thirty-four sailors, Marines and civilians were killed in the attack. The deliberate Israeli air and sea onslaught sought to sink the clearly identified intelligence gathering ship and kill all its crew. It was in truth the worst attack ever carried out on a U.S. Naval vessel in peace time. In addition to the death toll, 171 more of the crew were wounded in the two-hour assault, which was clearly intended to destroy the intelligence gathering vessel operating in international waters collecting information on the ongoing fighting between Israel and its Arab neighbors. The Israelis, whose planes had their Star of David markings covered up so Egypt could be blamed, attacked the ship repeatedly from the air and with torpedo boats from the sea. When one Israeli pilot hesitated, refusing to attack what was clearly an American ship, he was instructed to proceed anyway.

Most Americans are completely unaware that a United States naval vessel was once deliberately targeted and nearly sunk by America’s “greatest friend and ally” Israel. The attack was followed by a comprehensive cover-up that demonstrated clearly that at least one president of the United States even back nearly fifty years ago valued his relationship with the state of Israel above his loyalty to his own country.

The most disgusting part of the tale relates to how U.S. warplanes sent to the Liberty’s aid from an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean were called back by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara acting under orders from President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who declared that he would rather see the ship go to the bottom of the sea than embarrass his good friend Israel. Ironically, the first ship to reach the foundering Liberty and offer assistance was from the Soviet Union, an offer that was declined.

The incredible courage and determination of the surviving crew was the only thing that kept the Liberty from sinking. The ship’s commanding officer Captain William McGonagle was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic role in keeping the ship afloat, though President Lyndon Baines Johnson broke with tradition and refused to hold the medal ceremony in the White House, also declining to award it personally, delegating that task to the Secretary of the Navy in a closed to the public presentation made at the Washington Navy Yard. The additional medals given to other crew members in the aftermath of the attack made the U.S.S. Liberty the most decorated ship based on a single engagement with hostile forces in the history of the United States Navy.

The cover-up of the attack began immediately. The Liberty crew was sworn to secrecy over the incident, as were the Naval dockyard workers in Malta, and even the men of the U.S.S. Davis, which had assisted the badly damaged Liberty to port were ordered to be silent. A hastily convened and conducted court of inquiry ordered by Admiral John McCain interviewed only a few crewmen and did not seek to determine what had actually happened, instead, acting under orders from Washington, it moved quickly to declare the attack a case of mistaken identity. The inquiry’s senior legal counsel Captain Ward Boston, who subsequently declared the attack to be a “deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew,” also revealed that Admiral Isaac Kidd, who presided over the inquiry, had told him that “President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered him [Kidd] to conclude that the attack was a case of ‘mistaken identity’ despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.” The court’s findings were rewritten and sections relating to Israeli war crimes, to include the machine gunning of life rafts, were excised.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Senator John McCain of Arizona has used his position on the Senate Armed Services Committee to effectively block any reconvening of a board of inquiry to re-examine the evidence. The documents relating to the Liberty incident from the White House perspective of McNamara and Johnson, if they have not been destroyed, have never been released to the public in spite of the 50 years that have passed since the attack took place.

In retrospect, one might well have expected little better from the likes of Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara and either Admiral John McCain or his son, but the cover-up that has endured for fifty years involving the national media as well as politicians from both parties is perhaps even more disgraceful because it has established the principle that even when Israel targets and kills American military personnel it will never ever be held accountable. Such is the power of the Israel Lobby in the United States.

I’ll also be able to read and respond to comments when the task at hand is finished.

Amid the jubilee celebrations for the Six-Day War, the tragic story of the American spy ship USS Liberty – which was bombed by an Israeli fighter jet and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967 in the eastern Mediterranean – was somewhat overlooked. Thirty-four American sailors were killed in the Israeli attack and many others were wounded.

Israel apologized and paid compensation to the victims’ families. Israeli and American commissions of inquiry found that the attack was a mistake. But naturally, as often happens in such events, to this day there are some who believe Israel attacked the ship with malicious intent.

A conspiracy? Healthy suspicion? Call it what you will. A new book published in May in the United States (its authors include several survivors of the attack) promises that “the truth is being told as never before and the real story revealed.” The 302 pages of “Remember the Liberty!: Almost Sunk by Treason on the High Seas” include quite a number of documents, testimonies, arguments and information that were gathered in the subsequent 50 years.

The authors’ bottom line is that then-U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson was behind the attack, in an attempt to blame then-Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser – an excuse that would then enable the United States to join the Six-Day War.

The book includes, among other things, a CIA document from November 1967 that is still partially censored. In the document, which is also on the official CIA website, an anonymous source is quoted as saying: “They said that [then-Israeli Defense Minister Moshe] Dayan personally ordered the attack on the ship, and that one of his generals adamantly opposed the action and said, ‘This is pure murder.’” There is no dispute about the authenticity of the document, but clearly not every sentence written in an intelligence document is the unvarnished truth.

On the other hand, the new book quotes a story reported by former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Dwight Porter, who recounted a conversation between an Israeli pilot and the Israel Air Force war room, which was allegedly picked up by an NSA aircraft and inadvertently cabled to CIA offices around the world:

IDF war room to Israeli pilot: Yes, follow orders.

Israeli pilot to IDF war room: But sir, it’s an American ship – I can see the flag!

University of Iowa professor Sarah Bond thinks the white marble used in classical Greek, Roman and Renaissance statue is somehow related to the “white supremacist ideas today,” Campus Reform reports.

Bond posits in an article just published in Hyperallergic that “many of the statues reliefs and sarcophagi created in the ancient Western world were in fact painted,” by which she is suggesting that the white marble was colored in its original form.

Stretching matters even further, Bond goes on to suggest that “the equation of white marble with beauty is not an inherent truth of the universe,” making it “a dangerous construct that continues to influence white supremacist ideas today.”

Bond sees the propaganda of white supremacy everywhere, ranting about a conspiracy where “most museums and art history textbooks contain a predominantly neon white display of skin tone” that she has infected “the way we view the antique world.”

This “assemblage of neon whiteness serves to create a false idea of homogeneity — everyone was very white! — across the Mediterranean region.” Although Bond doesn’t complain about British actors playing so many Greek and Roman characters in popular films, she insists will those statues and pictures of white people are just “further ammunition for white supremacists today, including groups like Identity Europa, who use classical statuary as a symbol of white male superiority.”

Bond sees a large job ahead to rectify the errors of white supremacist art interpretation: “It may have taken just one classical statue to influence the false construction of race, but it will take many of us to tear it down,” Bond says, though adding optimistically that “we have the power to return color to the ancient world, but it has to start with us.”

African Invaders Headed for Italy Rescued Off Coast of Libya

What the Hell? Is there an infinite supply of old boats in North Africa? There never seems to be a shortage of boats ready to take the dregs of the earth to Europe.

Scuttle the boats and tell the Africans its just a short swim to Italy. They won’t know the difference.

At least when the Libyans pick up the jungle bunnies, they take them back to Libya. When the Italians pick them up, they take them to Italy.

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Nearly 80 migrants were rescued off Libya’s coast after clinging to their sinking boat for two days, though the bodies of seven people who did not survive were also recovered, officials said.

The 77 migrants, including a woman and one child, were rescued on Thursday off the coastal city of Zawiya in western Libya, Libyan coastguard and International Organization for Migration (IOM) officials said.

The boat became unseaworthy due to overloading, said Tripoli coast guard spokesman Ayoub Qassem.

“Some of them are suffering from burns as a result of remaining in the sea and under the sun for a long time,” Qassem said. They were given a medical treatment after they were taken on board a coast guard boat.”

The Libyan coastguard on Friday intercepted a further 562 sub-Saharan African migrants in a wooden boat off the coast of Sabratha, to the west of Zawiya. Some 2,300 migrants were pulled from rubber and wooden boats in international waters between Libya and Italy on Thursday, the Italian coastguard said.

The vast majority of migrants attempting to reach Europe by boat try to cross from Libya to Italy. Smugglers send them out in flimsy boats with little fuel, and most are picked up by international vessels after leaving Libyan waters.

More than 50,000 have made it to Italy so far this year, and numbers have surged over the past 10 days. Nearly 6,350 have been intercepted and turned back by the Libyan coastguard in 2017, and over 1,440 have died trying to cross, according to the IOM. At least 34 migrants, many of them young children, drowned on Wednesday.

As non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have boosted rescue operations in the Mediterranean they have repeatedly clashed with Libya’s coastguard.

On Tuesday, several NGOs said the Libyan coastguard had boarded a migrant boat, robbing the migrants and firing shots into the air. More than 60 people fell into the water in the ensuing panic, though no one was hurt, they said.

Qassem denied that the coastguard had fired at or over the migrants, or put them in danger.

From North Africa they come across the Mediterranean Sea by boat. Then across Europe to the English Channel at Calais. From there, it’s hitch a ride on a truck traveling the Channel Tunnel to England and they’re home free.

A SURGE in the number of migrants has sparked fears of another summer of chaos at Britain’s borders.

lmost 20,000 have already made it by sea to mainland Europe in the first 67 days of 2017, it emerged yesterday.

The crisis is set to intensify as the weather in the Mediterranean improves.

The French have closed six motorway service stations on the approaches to Calais to prevent them being used by migrants trying to sneak aboard UK-bound lorries.

But their action may have come too late, truckers’ leaders warned last night.

James Hookham, deputy chief executive of the Freight Transport Association, said: “Our members have reported signs that migrants are returning to Calais and French motorway operator Sanef’s move to close truck parking areas at services near the port due to problems confirms this.

“The French authorities need to take action before the situation gets any worse.

“We don’t want to see a return to last summer’s chaos when drivers suffered threats and intimidation at unprecedented levels.”

The looming crisis was laid bare in figures released by the International Organisation for Migration which revealed that 19,567 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea this year, up to March 8, a rate of almost 300 a day.

Tory MP David Davies said: “The European nations are aiding and abetting this chaotic exodus by sending out rescue boats to pick up thousands of migrants trying to enter the Continent illegally from North Africa.

“They should be taking them straight back to ports and safe refugee camps so they are not incentivised to risk their lives trying.

“I hope this worrying development doesn’t herald the return to the chaotic events of last year.”
