A few people on Twitter raised the possibility on Friday that President Donald Trump has been co-opted by evil forces within his administration. The wording of his support for General H. R. McMaster, his head of the National Security Council (who replaced General Michael Flynn), seems fishy to those skeptics. It leaves one wondering if Trump or someone else wrote that message of support.
The alt-right has been calling for Trump to fire McMaster, and with good reason. Reporter Sara Carter has been riding a tiger lately. I hope she keeps up her good work in exposing the Deep State.
Even Sean Hannity has questioned McMaster’s loyalty to Trump.
President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his support of Gen. H.R. McMaster, his national security adviser, amid growing calls from some Trump supporters who want McMaster fired.
“General McMaster and I are working very well together. He is a good man and very pro-Israel,” Trump said in a statement Friday night. “I am grateful for the work he continues to do serving our country.”
The knives have come out for McMaster among the most vocal, nationalist-leaning Trump supporters, many of whom are allies of the president’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon. Some have cast doubt on McMaster’s decisions in his role on Trump’s National Security Council, which included the firings of officials appointed by the man he replaced, Michael Flynn.
Others have questioned McMaster’s broader motivations, which they said seemed to counter Trump’s agenda.
Politico’s Pete Mansoor characterized the underswell of dissent as a split “between the Bannon camp of ideologues and the McMaster-Mattis-Tillerson camp of more centrist intellectuals.”
A senior White House official quoted by The New York Times on Friday night said Trump has “total confidence” in McMaster. The remarks follow unprecedented turnover in the Trump administration of late, in which the president has lost his press secretary, his chief of staff, and his communications director, all in the span of two weeks.
Sitting on the sidelines as we are, we have to hope that Trump is not as stupid in his assessment of McMaster as he appears. We also have to hope that he hasn’t been replaced by a Deep State doppelganger (just joking!). There’s something very odd about McMaster’s support for Obama’s NSC chief Susan Rice. We have no choice but to give this time to play out to see what happens.
