Traitor McCain Votes No on Obamacare Repeal

McCain Shafts Trump, throws victory to Obama, just as he did in 2008.

In the end it was not meant to be: Senate Republicans failed, by a single vote, to pass a month-long effort to pass Republican healthcare legislation culminating with a vote on a “skinny” bill to repeal Obamacare thanks to a single decisive vote by Donald Trump’s nemesis, John McCain.

In a devastating blow to President Trump and his healthcare agenda, Senate Republicans voted 49 to 51 to pass a slimmed down bill put forward as a last gasp effort to overhaul the US healthcare system, leaving the fate of Obamacare in the hands of Democrats and the general public.

Voting shortly after midnight, John McCain – who returned to the Senate on Tuesday after undergoing emergency surgery related to brain cancer – joined known repeal holdouts, GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) in opposing Health Care Freedom Act, HR 1628, the pared-down measure that would have repealed key parts of ObamaCare. Ironically, McCain cast the “no” vote two days after a dramatic return to the Senate floor during which he called on his colleagues to work together on major issues such as healthcare reform, which has long been a Senate tradition until the upsurge of partisanship in recent years.

McCain’s vote stunned many Republicans including Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.), who said he thought the Arizona Republican was in favor of the legislation. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told reporters, “I’m shocked at this.”

Vice President Pence was spotted lobbying McCain on the Senate floor shortly before the crucial vote. He also worked on Collins while other GOP leaders focused on Murkowski.

But those efforts fell short, as in the end it was personal for McCain, who emerged this year as one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics in Congress and the late-night healthcare vote cements his status as a maverick, a role he relished earlier in his career when President George W. Bush occupied the White House.

Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) said McCain was wrestling with the decision all day but in the end would not budge. “He had made up his mind and I’m not sure there was much that could have been done about it,” he said.

McCain declined to “go through my thought process” when reporters asked him about his vote. Moments later, when asked why he voted no, McCain responded “Because I thought it was the right vote.”

Earlier in the night, the CBO announced that the bare-bones healthcare proposal, dubbed the “skinny” repeal because it left untouched big sections of ObamaCare, would have resulted in 16 more million people being without insurance in a decade, while boosting premiums by 20%.

“This is clearly a disappointing moment,” said a visibly choked up Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, who pulled the health plan after the failed vote. McConnell appeared almost distraught after McCain’s surprise vote and seemed close to choking up on the floor after falling short of his promise to repeal ObamaCare. “I regret that our efforts were simply not enough this time. Now, I imagine many of our colleagues on the other side are celebrating. Probably pretty happy about all this. But the American people are hurting, and they need relief.”

The failed vote leaves Republicans facing a potential backlash from parts of their voter base, who have been told by lawmakers in four consecutive election cycles since 2010 that they were determined to abolish Barack Obama’s healthcare reforms. As the FT notes, Republican leaders now have the options of seeking to resurrect their plans or making a fresh start by trying modify Obamacare in collaboration with Democrats, who have acknowledged its imperfections but insist on defending its core features.

  1. McCain is certainly a slime ball of the worst kind. Though I am not surprised the POS did it. He hates Trump and he hates the American people.

Interestingly, throughout the current debate on repealing Obongo’s monstrosity, I haven’t heard a peep about tort reform. Then or now. It always seems to get left out of the conversation. I wonder (((who))) makes their living by chasing ambulances and forcing doctors and facilities to carry massive malpractice insurance. Strange that such a large contributing factor to our healthcare and insurance financial burdens never seems to come up for discussion.

  2. When this old bastard finally croaks, he should be cremated in half of a 55 gallon drum and his ashes sent back to Hanoi.
(Viet Nam vets will get the idea)

  3. McCain looks so evil in that photo getting his back slapped. Ugh!

    The good news is…

Bill Mitchell‏ Verified account @mitchellvii 9-10 hours ago:

–Democrats have lost 1000 seats nationally since first passing Obamacare. Last night they passed it again. Rinse. Repeat…

–Democrats and RINOs now OWN #Obamacare lock stock and barrel. Good luck running on that hot mess in 2018.

–What do Democrats have to run on in 2018? Let’s see: 1) Russiagate #FAIL. 2) Obamacare #FAIL. For their sake, let’s hope #FAIL is popular.

–Democrats just spent their last political dollar on a rusty ’72 Pinto. Good luck taking America out for a date in that thing. #Obamacare

LOL @ that last one. Have a laugh!

  4. “John McCain – who returned to the Senate on Tuesday after undergoing emergency surgery related to brain cancer”.

Only in the USA is an elderly man with Alzheimer’s, cancer and confirmed brain damage allowed to cast a vote in the Senate, a few days after a brain operation. Any other country would not have let him return to public office, ever. It is quite possible he voted No by mistake, thinking he was voting against Obamacare. Any man who has been held captive by an enemy for five years should be excluded from public office. Especially when the enemy were North Korea or North Vietnam where it is well known that brainwashing of prisoners took place. He may indeed have been a Communist agent ever since his release. McCain is a Manchurian Candidate.

Some wise joker said many years ago. “Every country gets the leaders they deserve”.

  5. In that last photo why does McCain have no bandage on his head? They can cut through bone and not need a bandage? They did not shave his head? Hair presents a risk of infection.

There is a Star Trek episode where I think Spock has major brain surgery done by some aliens – and no bandage, or even shaved hair. Like McCain.

  6. ” joined known repeal holdouts, GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) in opposing Health Care Freedom Act”.

Two Repooplican party traitors and both female (excluding the brain dead geriatric male). So this shows that what the shysters of the world needs are a lot more women in parliament. They will not toe the party line. They will vote on emotions. “Oh those poor people who are sick. They need health care. Doctors and lawyers and drug companies need a lot more money than the big bucks they are charging now. I want my share too. Who cares where the money comes from?”.

Same for Turdmigration. “Oh those poor hungry Biafrans who (((Sir Bob Geldof))) fed with music fan suckers money called “Bandaid”. They need a lot more food, plus cars and iPhones. They need a lot more shelter for their ten babies per woman. They must come to the West. Then they will be safe and can have a vibrant exciting time and make mongrel babies too. Who cares if white people are safe with all these Somaliopians?”.

  7. I don’t understand why these reporters and GOP Senators are professing such ‘shock’ at McCain’s betrayal. I saw it coming a mile away.

It’s time for McConnell to crack that famous whip of his. In the next two minutes or so, McCain needs to be absolutely stripped of all committee assignments. Same goes for those other 2 roaches. Actually, when you include the ‘Republicans’ who voted against the clean repeal bill a few days ago, it’s more like 7 roaches: Dean Heller, Lamar Alexander, McCain, etc.

Second thing is that Trump and the party need to immediately come to a public agreement with the AZ governor: McCain does NOT get to ‘pick’ his successor like a goddamn king would do. No Mitt Romney installed in the Senate when McCain dies, no Evan McMullin, etc. The GOP will have a shot at that ‘yes’ vote again real soon, and a dead man walking shouldn’t have a say in who casts that vote.

  8. When both parties are offering you the exact same dog’s stew, you should just automatically vote against every single incumbent every year there’s an election. Yep, including Ted Cruz. Even including Donald Trump in 2020 if they haven’t repealed Obamacare by then. Eventually they will take notice.

    • Not a bad idea Jim. All incumbents out, no job security. Corruption gets worse over time, so new people will be less corrupt on average. A new broom sweeps clean. Why not vote for a Third Party – if there is one. As WC Fields says “I never vote FOR anything. I always vote AGAINST”.

      • Trump should already be leading fundraisers for a candidate to primary Dean Heller, Jeff Flake, Ted Cruz, etc. And if Dean Heller et al get renominated, ask the voters to support the liberal Democrat. Naturally, the same super-duper #NeverTrump ‘conservatives’ who tacitly backed Hillary will scream bloody murder, but yeah, even the ‘good’ incumbents need to be voted out until a ‘second-party’ position emerges on the Obamacare repeal.

  9. If I had my way on this McCain replacement issue, I would want McCain to resign right before he croaked; and the last thing he saw in his life would be the AZ governor appointing Kelli Ward to replace him.
