Rep. Steve Scalise Released from Trauma Center, Begins “intensive” Rehab

NOLA

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, was discharged Tuesday (July 25) from the Washington, D.C., trauma center where he underwent several surgeries to repair injuries he suffered after being shot in the hip in June.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center announced Scalise will begin a period of “intensive inpatient rehabilitation” to continue his recovery.

The announcement didn’t disclose the facility where Scalise will undergo rehab.

Scalise, 51, was shot June 14 in Alexandria, Virginia, during practice for the annual congressional baseball game for charity.

The bullet from a high-powered rifle had ripped through the congressman’s lower body, tearing blood vessels, injuring organs and breaking bones. It took several procedures to stop the bleeding and more surgeries to begin repairing the damage.

The gunman was fatally shot when a security detail protecting Scalise returned fire. Before he was taken down, James T. Hodgkinson, 66, wounded three others at the practice.

Wednesday’s news of the congressman’s release from the hospital came three weeks after was readmitted to its intensive care to address “concerns for infection.” He had been downgraded from fair to serious condition and required additional surgery.

Dr. Jack Sava, the head trauma surgeon at Medstar Washington, said two days after the shooting that there was a good chance Scalise could walk and run again, although he faced a long recovery and rehabilitation period. Since then, the hospital and the congressman’s staff and family have offered few specifics on the extent of his injuries or projections on how long it would take Scalise to recover.

Another sign of his improvement came Monday night when Scalise took part in a House GOP conference call. According to the Associated Press, he phoned in to thank everyone for their hard work and tell them he looked forward to working through his recovery.

Scalise has been released from the hospital!

Hopefully the scrutiny afforded him by the death of Seth Rich is what saved him. GOOD. We can’t lose Scalise. That is great news
