Here in San Antonio, Texas, Mexicans are known for perpetrating dog rapes. Whoever the assailant is must be found and neutralized.
ARLINGTON, Va. (ABC7) —
A beagle and basset hound mix was sexually assaulted so severely, vets with the Homeward Trails Animal Rescue are calling it one of the worst cases of abuse they’ve ever seen.
Homeward Trails says Huggles, the beagle and basset hound mix, came into their shelter mid-June in enormous pain, and appeared to have a uterine infection.
After spaying her and getting her started on antibiotics right away, the animal rescue says things improved, but then quickly worsened.
Huggles was bleeding heavily from her vulva, and becoming lethargic. After performing an x-ray, vets noticed something very strange.
That “something very strange” revealed what the animal rescue says was “one of the worse cases of abuse the vets had ever seen.”
“I had to get up from my desk at work and compose myself because I really thought I was going to get sick,” said Shelly de Souza, who is now fostering Huggles.
The disturbing details were enough to turn de Souza’s stomach.
Huggles was sexually assaulted with a broom handle, and during the assault, the plastic part of the handle broke off inside of her causing a “horrific infection,” the Homeward Trails says.
Vets with the rescue immediately went into action, removing the broom handle. They say Huggles is now on the road to recovery thanks to the help of very generous donors.
Homeward Trails set up a Razoo account, hoping to raise $4,200 for Huggles procedures. Fortunately, they exceeded that goal and raised just shy of $5,000.
Though Huggles is getting better – and recovering nicely in a foster home – Homeward Trails says they’re still looking for the perpetrator. The shelter is offering a $200 reward for information, and they’ve teamed up with Animal Control in the area in which Huggles was found.
Huggles was initially rescued from a shelter in Isle of Wight County, where she was brought in as a stray. Right now, Homeward Trails and Animal Control are working to file an official report in “the hopes that a message to the larger community can be issued.”
“If this person would do this to a dog you got a very serious person on your hands that I’m sure is evolving into something much more sinister than just an animal,” de Souza said.
“It’s something that is irreprehensible and if we can find the person who did that I would certainly be in favor of them serving jail time,” Goodhart said.
Huggles is expected to make a full recovery. She has a post-operation appointment next week, and if given the all clear, she will be put up for adoption.
There’s three more pictures of Huggles at the source site, wearing a doggie cone to keep her from licking her wounds.
